Insight into the work
Being a level designer for Seafarer brought new challenges. On the one hand, the working simulation genre requires different processes than what I was used to in more linear games. On the other hand, the world itself was a challenge. The game features an incredibly large area for missions and free exploration. At the same time though, it has one thing above all else: a lot of water. Away from the ports, there’s little direct world design influence, such as paths, barriers, or the usual player guidance. The open sea limits some level design possibilities but enhances other aspects of mission and game design.

Harbours
Despite all the water, blockouts were still a must have. Most of the blockout work went into the ports. Their layout, the different docks, and their unique characteristics were shaped by level design and brought to life together with the art department. They’re based on research into real-life ports, but are also designed to support the gameplay.

Mission examples
Most of my work involved designing and implementing missions. In the end, Seafarer featured over 40 missions covering various areas of work. These ranged from small tasks to larger chains of jobs and storylines. Here you can find some of the areas I've been working on.
Cargo - Tug missions
Tug missions range from isolated tug operations to more complex operations involving the loading and unloading of cargo.

Tide Guard - Inspection missions
Tide Guard is the security section of the Gameplay factions. One part of it is the inspection gameplay, which I've been working on. You can find multiple missions that are related to this gameplay or derived from it.

Tutorial missions
Tutorial missions teach players the gameplay elements and controls or help them improve their skills.

Special missions
There are some special missions that either focus more on their own individual storyline or use gameplay elements in a slightly different way.
